VIRGINIA PENINSULA PARALEGAL ASSOCIATION
LEVELS OF
MEMBERSHIP (VAPPA)
Active
Membership: Active membership is open to any individual who
meets at least one of the following requirements, (i) successful
completion of the NALA Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) Examination;
(ii) graduation from an ABA approved program of legal studies; (iii)
graduation from a legal studies course which is institutionally
accredited but not ABA approved and which requires not less than the
equivalent of 60 semester hours; (iv) graduation from a legal
studies course other than those already mentioned, plus not less
than six (6) months in-house training as a paralegal, with
employer-attorney attestation; (v) graduation with a baccalaureate
degree in any field, plus not less than six (6) months in-house
training as paralegal, with employer-attorney attestation; (vi) a
minimum of three (3) years' experience under the supervision of an
attorney, including at least six (6) months of in-house training as
a paralegal, with employer-attorney attestation; or (vii) a minimum
of two (2) years of in-house training as a paralegal, with
attorney-employer attestation. Active members have full voting
privileges and may serve as association officers, members of the
executive committee, or committee chairs. ($35.00 annual fee)
Sustaining Membership: Sustaining (non-voting)
membership is open to all paralegals and legal assistants who meet
the qualifications for active membership, but are not in a position
to fulfill the active membership requirements as set forth in the
bylaws. ($60.00 annual fee)
Associate Membership:
Associate (non-voting) membership is open to those persons or
entities that endorse the paralegal concept, including (i) members
of bar associations; (ii) members of the educational field; (iii)
paralegal supervisors; (iv) paralegals who are employed as such but
do not meet requirements for active membership; and (v) persons in
law-related fields. ($25.00 annual fee)
Student
Membership: Student (non-voting) membership is open to any
individual who is a full-time or part-time student in good standing
in any college pursuing a program of legal studies. ($25.00 annual
fee)
NOTE: All members are entitled to attend monthly
meetings and other functions of VAPPA.
